Wills: Not Just for Old People

You might think wills are something you deal with in your 60s, but if you own a house or have people you care about, you need one. A will tells everyone what should happen to your stuff (and your money) if you pass away.

Without one, things can get messy—and the law, not you, will decide where everything goes.

  • You decide who gets what (instead of leaving it up to chance).
  • It makes life easier for your family and friends.
  • You can leave something meaningful to the people you love.

Powers of Attorney: Your Backup Plan

What if something happened that left you unable to make decisions—like a serious illness or accident? A power of attorney lets you pick someone you trust to handle things for you, like managing your money or making health decisions on your behalf.

It’s not just for older people. It’s about protecting yourself, no matter what life throws your way.

You’ve worked hard to get your place—so protect it! Building and contents insurance is your safety net when the unexpected happens (burst pipes, fire, break-ins—you name it).

👉 Buildings Insurance covers the structure of your home—walls, roof, windows, and everything else that keeps your house standing. If you’ve got a mortgage, it’s usually compulsory.

👉 Contents Insurance covers the stuff inside: your furniture, gadgets, clothes, and even that coffee machine you can’t live without.

It’s way cheaper than replacing everything yourself if something goes wrong.

Conveyancing is the legal process of transferring a property from the seller to you. Sounds boring, but it’s super important. A conveyancer or solicitor will:

  • Check the legal details of the property
  • Make sure there aren’t any hidden problems (like unpaid debts attached to the house)
  • Handle contracts and all the official paperwork

Trust us—this isn’t the kind of thing you want to DIY. Find a good solicitor to guide you through the process and keep everything above board.

Buying a home is a big deal, so it’s smart to get a building survey before you commit. This isn’t just a quick once-over—it’s a detailed check to spot any problems, like structural issues, or damp.

There are different types of surveys, depending on how much detail you want:

  • Basic Valuation (Level 1): Great for newer properties—just highlights major issues. (for lenders benefit only)
  • Homebuyer Report (Level 2): A deeper dive into potential problems, including things like damp and subsidence.
  • Full Structural Survey ( Level 3): Ideal for older or unusual homes.

Why Bother?

It could save you thousands in repairs later. No one wants to find out their dream home has a leaky roof after moving in.
